Top 5 DIY Coasters

From mini vinyls and magazines to discarded floppy disks, these DIY coasters prove that a little creativity and simple production skills can turn almost anything into the beginning of a desktop conversation.

Wood Slices

Use a hacksaw, hand saw, or table saw to cut the cross section into a dead bar. Divide the surface of the wood chip in half with paint tape, and then use a sponge brush to paint the exposed part. Be creative and use multiple tones and try different patterns

Magazine Pages

Use table coasters made from recycled magazine pages to add a touch of color and pattern to your dining table. Tear off the pages, then fold each page into 1/4 inch strips and apply rubber cement. Next, cut about 25 strips and set them aside. Unfold the paper clip and wrap the first strip to create a perfect hole in the center of the roller coaster. Once the first strip is wrapped around the paperclip, wrap it firmly with hot glue beads. Continue to roll the strips around the paperclip, then place the other strips on top, and fix each strip to the other with glue. Once the shape of the coaster is formed, use glue to fix the end of the last strip in place.

Rope

Rope spools can bring a touch of farmhouse charm to the tabletop. Unroll the rope from the spool and apply acrylic sealant. Wrap the pencil around the string until it is about 3 inches wide in diameter. Protect the bottom and reinforce it by cutting a cork stopper, then attach it to the rope coaster with hot glue.

Wood Trim

Assemble wooden decorations into mini transport trays to bring a rustic feel to your desktop. Use a utility knife to cut four 1/2 x 1/8 inch decorative strips into 4 inch strips. (These will become slats.) Next, cut three 1/4-inch strips to the size of the bottom structure. Use wood glue to fix the bottom structure to the slats.

Floppy Disk

Virtual clouds are now the norm for backing up digital files, and floppy disks are virtually extinct. Use a floppy disk as a drink coaster to add nostalgia to your desktop. They can be simply placed on the table and can be used without any handcrafting, or they can be made waterproof by resin treatment.
